Where BMW strayed from the beaten path.

Remember BMW back in the old days? The brand was full of life, full of joy. Now it’s just a mass producer of dreary “gentlemen’s cars”. There was a time when an “M” badge or a “tii” designation actually meant something. A 3 Series was still in fact a 3 Series. Now they’re looking to make an “M4”. What the hell happened there? BMW had a racing pedigree and a sporty feel like no other brand in it’s time. The “BMW is JOY” Ad campaign would’ve been congruent 20 years ago, but with the company’s direction today, it couldn’t be more wrong.

Not only have they molested and grotesquely distorted what a Mini should be, but they’ve given Mini the feel that BMW once purveyed. A youthful, happy brand. Full of life. Full of Joy. I’m not saying this is a bad thing, they’ve correctly paired and tailored a message that suits the car. But, with the allusion to BMW “Art Cars” in this commercial, I can’t help but think that this could still be the BMW that I still love. The Germans really do know how to build a car, they just don’t understand how to bank on what they have going for them. Things like; The E21, The E30. These cars did great things for BMW, but were never really utilized tot their full potential. We need to see the return of the BMW E30. We arguably have with the 1M. But, a cheap, tossable, compact, RWD drivers car with the good old BMW feel would be exactly what they need to get back to where they started. Never lose sight of your roots, they might just be the most valuable thing you could possibly lose.

I’ve never felt so nostalgic about a Rallying video before! Remember, If in doubt, flat out. :)

Colin’s Focus (Y5FMC). This is the car that Colin rolled off a ledge in Corsica in 2000. He broke his hand & it took them almost an hour to cut him out of the car. It’s been meticulously restored and now stays in running condition at Dirtfish rally school here in Seattle Washington.

Here’s a video of the crash:
